The Truth For America

Health Care Reform and America’s Foundation

February 2010

Greetings and welcome to this February edition of The Truth for America.  In the last edition when I dealt with this topic the House and Senate had both passed their version of Health Care or Health Insurance Reform.  It appeared to the natural eye at that time that passage into law was a real possibility.  I discussed the role of government in the delivery of health care and the right of citizens to health care from a Biblical prospective.  The conclusion was that the government from a Biblical prospective has no role in the administration or delivery of health care.  From the Biblical prospective I evaluated the right to health care guaranteed by the government and the Bible issues no mandate. In this edition of The Truth for America we are going to look at this issue in further detail with an eye to the connection between our Bible and our founding documents.

Let me ask you a question.  Where are the Pastors of America in this debate?  So far as I can tell they are absent.  Is that consistent with our heritage?  No, not even close.  I would encourage all people to review a work by David Barton from Wallbuilders entitled “The Role of Pastors & Christians in Civil Government”.  I think you will find it very enlightening and you will wonder why we are not hearing this in the pulpits and history classes across America.  The answer is wickedness in high places.  I am talking about wickedness in the Church.  In all generations God raises up Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers to teach the Truth but they have failed miserably over the last 60 years.  The very highest places in all the earth are in the Kingdom of God.  That is why we are told that God’s people must turn from wickedness!

2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)
14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

David Barton states: “Of the fifty-six signers of the Declaration, more than half were educated in schools established for the purpose of training ministers for the Gospel, and they received what today would be considered degrees from seminaries or Bible schools.”  Have you heard your Pastor mention that?  Or have you heard that politics is dirty and the Church is to leave it alone?  Well the Church left politics alone and look at the mess, we are not even close today to what the founders envisioned.  Pastors of all people should understand that our lives are to be founded on bedrock truths not a “living, evolving” truth.  The bedrock Truth for Christians is the Holy Bible.  This is a Christian Nation.  This government can not function properly devoid of a moral Christian people.

The Declaration of Independence is the soul (the intent and purpose) of the Constitution of America.  Our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution are based heavily on two writing by John Locke.  These are his “Two Treatises of Government” and the “Treatise of Government”.  In the later book Locke refers to the Bible over 1500 times in less than 400 pages.  So, would it be fair to say that our Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of America are based upon the Bible?    The fundamental Truth for Christians is the Holy Bible.  The basis, the source document for John Locke’s writings on government was the Holy Bible.  The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of America as well as the Bill of Rights are founded very heavily on Locke’s writings and Scripture.  Thus our founding documents are derived from the Scripture.

I thank God for the election of Scott Brown to the U.S. Senate from the State of Massachusetts.  This has caused many in the government to pause and re-evaluate where they are heading.  Unfortunately it seems these thoughts revolve more around their elect ability than what is good for “we the people”.  I see this as well as the newly elected Governors of New Jersey and Virginia as the early stages of the last and greatest awakening.  Awakening to what? God, the Truth.  It seems to me at times that it is not the Church that is awakening first but those outside of the Church.  People across America are rising up and saying, whoa!  What about our Constitution?  What about the Declaration of Independence?  The same thing is going to have to happen in the Church.  We are going to have to say, what about the Bible?  Meditate on the following Scriptures.

Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)
18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

We need a vision, a vision of what?  We need a vision of the wonderful way of God and the future that way will produce.  His way will produce the Garden of Eden in the earth.

Proverbs 14:12 (KJV)
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

The Scripture admonishes us not to be wise in our own sight or to think that we understand all things.

Isaiah 5:21 (KJV)
21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

Psalms 127:1 (KJV)
1 Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

I say, Amen, Selah.

Three myths or lies have been spoken and many have accepted as truth.  They are:

  1. Health care is a right not a commodity.

  2. There is a health care crisis.

  3. The government can deliver better health care than the private sector.

Let us look at a very precious document that is an essential part of the foundation of this Republic.  This document is the Declaration of Independence which has two main parts.  One part of the Declaration of Independence declares why the colonies were becoming independent from Great Britain.  The second part declares the intent and purpose of the new government of the United States of America.  The very first thing in the Declaration of Independence is the recognition of God as our “Creator”.  If the founders thought it so important to acknowledge God why are our current leaders trying to separate them and us from the importance of God in the public square?  Next we find that God has given us unalienable rights “among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”  Who gave us those rights?  Yes, they are God given not given by the government.  Next we are told that the people give the government power not the other way around.  Think now, do the current health care proposals enhance your life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.  Do their proposals strengthen you or the government?

The Declaration of Independence goes on to say that this new federal government was to: “have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do.”    Let us take a moment and review the role of the Federal Government.  As you may already know it was to be very simple.  The Federal Government was to do what was necessary to provide an environment that promoted life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all persons or citizens.  This is the life of the unborn (from conception) to the last breaths of life in the elderly and everyone in between.  This government was to promote an atmosphere, a framework within which the liberty of every citizen would be assured.  This is not only liberty have homes and lands and to travel freely in America but the liberty and obligation to exercise stewardship over government at all levels.  A failure to vote according to Holy Scripture is wickedness, sin, and gives way for the curse in your life.  The Federal Government is to assure that we can pursue happiness.  The government is not responsible for our happiness.  We alone are responsible for our happiness.

The framers of this American government, this democratic republic end the Declaration of Independence by again recognizing Almighty God saying; “And for the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.”   Can you and I say the same thing?
