Does Science actually Support
or Contradict the Bible?
By Jim Reagan
August 2008
The split of the Church
historically with Science occurred primarily during the period of the
Renaissance. The word
Renaissance itself comes from a French word meaning “to be born again”.
This is not quite what Jesus meant in the gospel of John 3:3, when Jesus spoke
of being born again. He was not speaking of turning over a new leaf in your
life. He was not speaking of setting up a goal such as in a New Years
resolution. No, rather, He was speaking of a complete transformation or a new
creation actually taking place within someone’s very heart. (2 Corinthians 5:17,
Ezekiel 36:26). Yet, what was being born in the Renaissance was a new level of
intellectualism and humanism.
The scientific and philosophical
world was actively engaged in the training and the stretching of one’s mind, and
the building upon new theories and concepts and ideas. Ideas that would
eventually become a potential threat to the authority of the church at the
time. For if these ideas would grow, the fear was, that there would be a
dissolution of faith, and perhaps the introduction of another dreaded heresy or
false doctrine. In ways the fear was justified, for look what Darwinist
thinking has done to our children and our teen-agers in promoting the belief of
“that there is no God or Creator” responsible for the wonderful designs and
things that we find in nature. Rather, we are now more accustomed to these
things coming into existence by chance.
Yet, there is a good thing about
stretching one’s mind. In Hosea for instance it says that “My people die
because of a lack of knowledge. Paul spoke of adding to your faith knowledge,
and in Proverbs you will find many verses speaking good of knowledge. In Isaiah
1:18 we see a plea from God, saying “Come now let us reason together….” So on
one hand it does not look like God is surprised or disturbed if we learn
something new. It is only disturbing to him if that knowledge leads to our
disobedience or it leads us in pride to supercede our faith rather than that
knowledge and reason simply adding to our faith. Even faith by itself loses
value to God if it does not sit properly within the vehicle or gift of Love. 1
Corinthians Chapter 13.
Therefore Science should
rightfully be subordinate to, and aimed at, the defence of the existence and the
power of God, but is by no means necessary to prove God’s existence whatsoever.
God’s existence is independent of one’s belief, opinion, or proof. God himself
stated to Moses “I am who I am”. That is simply enough. Nothing else is
needed.
Rene Descartes stated “I think, and therefore I am” Yet, God doesn’t need to
water down Himself with “I think”. His presence and power and love is much
greater than our human intellectual thought, even though He has stated “My
thoughts are greater than your thoughts, and My ways are higher than your ways.
Love is a grander outpouring in comparison to intellect alone, as it centers in,
and comes from the heart, and not the head.
Now in Science we still find
wonderful examples that point to His Magnificence and organization. These
examples are great tools for us to use when people try to use their heads and
reason and attempt to discount the Word of God. In fact it is difficult to
understand why any Doctor, PHD, or Scientist, discredit the word of God using
the reason and scientific understanding that they have. It is because deep
down, as long as they can continue to use Science as a means to reject the
existence and notion of God, than they are free to do whatever they choose with
their life, as “God doesn’t exist for me right now, so let me be, please!” This
is how Science and Philosophy are used to justify personal rebellion. If there
is no God then there cannot be rebellion for rebellion only can occur if there
is an existing authority to rebel against.
So let’s look at a few of the
wonders found in Science and see the support that they give in reflecting the
handiworks of God. We are going to look at some classical examples of
scientific laws and things being found in the Word of God long before they were
discovered or even scientifically hypothesized by man. This fact alone, that
is, of scripture containing the scientific knowledge pre-discovered ahead of
time, should be well enough to establish the existence of God, as being the one
who built the universe. He would therefore already know what frameworks and
laws the natural universe contained within it. He would also know how and be
able to break or supercede those laws at will for He would be in complete
control of those laws if He designed them and put them together. This brings to
mind the comment the disciples made when Jesus calmed the Sea, when they said
“Who is this that wind and sea obey Him?
Here is a short list of
scientific facts pre-spoken of in the Word of God before man scientifically
discovered or proved their existence.
-
Law of Conservation of mass and energy.
This law states that the total amount of energy and mass is constant in the
universe. No new matter can be created but only a rearrangement of matter
or energy or both. (Lavoisier- 1789)
Here is the bible verse stating
this very thing written by King Solomon about 1000 BC.
Ecclesiastes 3:14
“I know whatever God does endures forever. Nothing can be added to it, or taken
away from it…..”
2. Newton’s third law
- With every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
(Newton – 1697)
Here is the bible verse stating
this very thing.
“Whatever you sow, that shall
you reap.” Galatians 6:6-8
-
Bloodletting was used as a treatment for sickness before it
was re-examined by Dr. Marshall Hall - Physiologist 1830. In 1900 Karl
Landsteiner discovered ABO blood types. After the 1900s many discoveries
have occurred showing the physiological, biochemical, genetic and many other
life processes found and measured from, in the blood.
The bible verse
that states these things is;
“The life is in
the blood” Leviticus 17:11
-
DNA replication, transcription, and
protein construction are observed
to happen step by
step, or piece by piece, in the scientific and medical world views.
The bible verse
Psalm 139:13-14
“For it was you who
created my inward parts, who knit me together in my
mother’s womb.”
How is it that King
David could even guess so accurately?

Geological
Plate Tectonic theory – 1960’s
The Plate tectonic theory
basically states that the land mass was together and called Pangaea. This
Pangaea land mass was subdivided into underlying plates in the crust and moved
apart across the waters and separated into our present day continents.
(Interestingly enough there is a repetitive artistic developmental echo with the
newly conceived fetus in the womb where it starts out as one mass of cells and
then differentiates and spreads out into separate tissues and organ systems in
the waters of the womb as it develops fully in to a full term baby.)
Psalms 136:6 “He spread the
land upon the waters.”
-
The Expansion of the Heavens -
Inflation theory – (Alan Guth 1980)
The inflation theory basically
fits into the first infintessimal moments of the Big Bang. Scientist are now
using microwave imaging data to support this. The thought is that the energy of
the light from Big Bang exploded and the explosion caused the expansion. If you
go to Jim’s World, you will see that God stretched out the Heaven’s by His
hands. This stretching would be different from expansion due to an indifferent
explosion.
This verse in the NIV version
wonderfully describes this:
Isaiah 45:12-13
“It is I who created the earth,
and created mankind on it,
My own hands stretched out the
heavens;
I marshaled their starry hosts.”
When you marshal something you
coordinate forces, like men in an army, in particular array. This means that
God had not only direct involvement with the expansion of, and the stretching of
the heavens, He also had specific control over the star positioning, which
includes the earth’s constellation arrangement.
What is interesting about verse
13 is where God speaks through the prophet Isaiah that he would raise up Cyrus
to rebuild his city. Isaiah spoke to Israel before the city was destroyed, and
God pointed out his pre-awareness of what king would allow Israel to rebuild the
city after it had been destroyed. King Cyrus of Persia was not even born
yet!!! Not only can God position things in space, He can also position events
in time.
If God has this kind of
foreknowledge in general, can He not be trusted to guide our individual lives?
That’s why He demonstrates to us in so many ways, in His word, His superior
skills and abilities to lead and guide. If we put ourselves into His hands of
love, how far could He stretch and expand our own universe for His
glory. How far did He stretch out His own heart toward us, when He chose to
give to us the most precious gift of His own Son? How far are you willing to go
to be fair with Him and receive Him? Its really so simple to trust Him. Just
trust Him.
